West Brom midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu has revealed Arsenal have made an approach to sign him during the January transfer window.

“I’ve had approaches from Arsenal,” Mulumbu is quoted as saying in The Sun.

“I could leave this winter. This is the right time for me to set my sights higher. I’m ready to join a top-four club.

“We are not professional enough in the way we manage our games – for example our draw at Chelsea. We are not mature enough.”

This is a very interesting situation as most of Arsenal’s attention in the upcoming transfer window is centered around bringing in a new striker to help take the pressure off Olivier Giroud. It is easy to forget that there are still some other positions in the Arsenal side that need strengthening.

A person who does not know may think that Arsenal have way too many midfielders so they do not need to bring in anymore. But on closer examination, Arsenal could do with another defensive midfielder like Mulumbu. Currently Arteta is playing the defensive midfield role together with Flamini. Arteta is much better suited being given a role where he can go forward more and Flamini, although he has been very good this season, we must not forget that he is getting on in age as he will be 30 next year. Signing a player like Mulumbu would add some steal to our side as he his a very hard player and still only 26-years old.

It would be interesting to see if West Brom are interested in selling one of their star players but judging from Mulumbu’s comments about the club, it seems like he has had enough and wants to leave.

Would Mulumbu be a good signing for Arsenal?
