Arsenal’s hunt for a new central defender is set to continue. It is being reported that Arsenal have made a £10million bid for Everton’s Phil Jagielka but the Merseyside club have rejected this bid and it is understood that they want as much as £20million which in my opinion is crazy!
Wenger may have to make a slighter higher bid for Jagielka if he wants to get him man. There is no doubt that we need a new central defender if we are going to challenge for honours this coming season.
Earlier on in the transfer window, we were strongly linked with moves for Blackburn’s Chris Samba and Bolton’s Gary Cahill but neither of them have joined Arsenal yet. Bolton are holding out for £17million for Cahill which in my opinion is also a bit too much.
These prices for Jagielka and Cahill are inflated just because they are English. I do not get this premium clubs are playing for English players. It is not that they are amazingly good but it seems like the reason is that clubs now need to get as many English players in their squad as possible with the new UEFA rules coming up.
If you had to chose one between Jagielka, Samba and Cahill, who would you want Arsenal to sign?
My first choice any day would be Chris Samba

Wenger isn’t cheap, he just doesn’t pay the hugely inflated prices that English players seem to demand.
Roger, £35m for Carrol!!!? English players are vastly overrated. However, the generation coming up now at Arsenal is hugely promising. Wilshere is just the first of many.

Vela is goign to be a superstar, our whole carling cup team from 3 years ago were emant to be superstars, lansbury, denilson,all the other so called youth project players at that time were emant to be dominating the following season, then the enxt season, the the next, the the next. every year you bastards just reopeat the same thing, dont it will be the next year line. STFU no it wont, if it was we would have won soemthign all the previuos 7 years u donkeys have been syaing it, with our so called amazing youth.
perhaps he is overpriced at nearer 20 million…but then so was phil jones from blackburn to man utd…but it didnt stop fergie..he just goes and does the business. Wenger has to take a financial hit now and then…..ok he may feel he has paid 5 or so million over the top, but in the long run it could make the difference between a trophy and the start of a successful era. It may also keep us in the champs league.(securing 30 million or so in revenue ) This is where i can’t see wenger’s logic…his false economy…..sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.
Our major weakness is at set pieces because our defenders are too short to compete with the big boys. How does 5’11” Jagielka solve that. We need height not more midgets

i think most arsenal fans agree that the man we all would love to have would be chris samba! he has the height, the strength, the passion, the experience and he is 1 year older than cahill and he cost 12 million,,,, come on wenger just get the man please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only solution to arsenal defensive problem is chris samba. Someone should tell me what wenger is looking for in injury prone jakieka who have shown no love for arsenal football club

Samba is the best player of the three by a large degree. Jagielka is not a world class defender. End of. Buying him would be admitting our defence cannot compete with the defence of a Man Utd team or Chelsea team. Cahill has talent but at the moment is still not a top defender. In honesty, it is hard to find a real top quality defender not owned by one of the big clubs in Europe though. With the potential there Cahill would be next on my list probably. SO – buy Samba, try to get Cahill and don’t bother wasting the money on Jagielka.
With a defensive line up of Vermaelen, Koscielny, Samba, Cahill, Djourou, Jenkinson, Sagna, Gibbs and Traore our defence within the next 2-3 years would become one of the strongest in the country. With all the young players within that we have talent to come through while having some players able to keep us challenging until we’re ready for a major push.
