Arsenal’s hunt for a new central defender is set to continue. It is being reported that Arsenal have made a £10million bid for Everton’s Phil Jagielka but the Merseyside club have rejected this bid and it is understood that they want as much as £20million which in my opinion is crazy!

Wenger may have to make a slighter higher bid for Jagielka if he wants to get him man. There is no doubt that we need a new central defender if we are going to challenge for honours this coming season.

Earlier on in the transfer window, we were strongly linked with moves for Blackburn’s Chris Samba and Bolton’s Gary Cahill but neither of them have joined Arsenal yet. Bolton are holding out for £17million for Cahill which in my opinion is also a bit too much.

These prices for Jagielka and Cahill are inflated just because they are English. I do not get this premium clubs are playing for English players. It is not that they are amazingly good but it seems like the reason is that clubs now need to get as many English players in their squad as possible with the new UEFA rules coming up.

If you had to chose one between Jagielka, Samba and Cahill, who would you want Arsenal to sign?

My first choice any day would be Chris Samba

  2. Kai says:

I agree, Samba, and we would still probably get him for the most reasonable price.

  3. mr creosote says:

Jags. Always looked a good player to me.

  4. Dave says:

Cahill. It’s inflated but unsurprisingly he’ll still be english in the future when we may want to sell him, hence an equivilently inflated resell value…

let wenger sighn new players becoz we are tired of young kids.

  8. roger says:

wenger trully is the cheapest bastard ever. For average yough players he will pay millions, but for established premiership players he will pay peanuts. His a bloody joke

  9. Olayinka stephen says:

Chris samba is agile, much more stronger than the likes.i go for him

  10. Jeansy says:

Roger its call negotiation. You have to open like that so you have room to manouvere to the price you want.

Wenger isn’t cheap, he just doesn’t pay the hugely inflated prices that English players seem to demand.

  11. T2T says:

Roger, £35m for Carrol!!!? English players are vastly overrated. However, the generation coming up now at Arsenal is hugely promising. Wilshere is just the first of many.

  12. Prince Amaegbe says:

plz wenger sign samba…. U this man wot is wrong wit u?

  13. allan michaud says:

samba is the biggest and best option for me, jags is too short and 29 next month. cahill also good option but 20mm is crazy

  15. DEO says:

Buy Samba. What crazy price tag are they putting on English players. Soon EPL will crumble just as Serie A crumbled.

  16. mojaidon says:

  17. roger says:

WTfa re u talkign about T2T, AKB bastards have been saying the same thing for the past 6-7 years. Vela is goign to be a superstar, our whole carling cup team from 3 years ago were emant to be superstars, lansbury, denilson, all the other so called youth project players at that time were emant to be dominating the following season, then the enxt season, the the next, the the next. every year you bastards just reopeat the same thing, dont it will be the next year line. STFU no it wont, if it was we would have won soemthign all the previuos 7 years u donkeys have been syaing it, with our so called amazing youth.

  18. wengernumb says:

perhaps he is overpriced at nearer 20 million…but then so was phil jones from blackburn to man utd…but it didnt stop fergie..he just goes and does the business. Wenger has to take a financial hit now and then…..ok he may feel he has paid 5 or so million over the top, but in the long run it could make the difference between a trophy and the start of a successful era. It may also keep us in the champs league.(securing 30 million or so in revenue ) This is where i can’t see wenger’s logic…his false economy…..sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.

  19. NickW says:

Our major weakness is at set pieces because our defenders are too short to compete with the big boys. How does 5’11” Jagielka solve that. We need height not more midgets

  20. I like samba because he is stronger than other and again he as big hieght that we need.

  21. Alan D says:

    samba anyday

  22. jaydee says:

wenger plz singn us playerz of good quality.gunner’s til i drop.

  23. gooner92 says:

i think most arsenal fans agree that the man we all would love to have would be chris samba! he has the height, the strength, the passion, the experience and he is 1 year older than cahill and he cost 12 million,,,, come on wenger just get the man please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Kole says:

The only solution to arsenal defensive problem is chris samba. Someone should tell me what wenger is looking for in injury prone jakieka who have shown no love for arsenal football club

  25. Mark says:

Screw those three! Go get Mertesacker!

  26. TrueWisdom says:

I agree with Mark. Mertesacker is world class, unlike Samba Cahill and Jagielka

  27. Peter says:

Samba, wenger dont know in order to get u must give.BASTARD!

  28. Chris Bayliss says:

Samba is the best player of the three by a large degree. Jagielka is not a world class defender. End of. Buying him would be admitting our defence cannot compete with the defence of a Man Utd team or Chelsea team. Cahill has talent but at the moment is still not a top defender. In honesty, it is hard to find a real top quality defender not owned by one of the big clubs in Europe though. With the potential there Cahill would be next on my list probably. SO – buy Samba, try to get Cahill and don’t bother wasting the money on Jagielka.

With a defensive line up of Vermaelen, Koscielny, Samba, Cahill, Djourou, Jenkinson, Sagna, Gibbs and Traore our defence within the next 2-3 years would become one of the strongest in the country. With all the young players within that we have talent to come through while having some players able to keep us challenging until we’re ready for a major push.
