Arsenal join Spurs in race for Bayern star

Arsenal have reportedly joined North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign out-of-favour Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri in January.

The Switzerland international has been heavily linked with a switch away from the Allianz Arena after starting just 34 games in his two years at the club.

Speculation has mounted in recent days that the 23-year-old – whose contract expires in 2016 – was White Hart Lane-bound, but according to the Daily Star, we have joined Spurs in the pursuit.

Shaqiri, who has 16 goals inĀ  75 Bayern appearances, is also thought to be courting interest from both Liverpool and Juventus.

But with Liverpool in decline and Tottenham being, well, Tottenham, it may well come down to a two-horse race between ourselves and Juventus to capture Shaqiri.

He was one of only two players at a star-studded World Cup 2014 to score a hat-trick in the competition. Here’s a reminder of what the bloke can do:
