A question which I have debated with a few people, many have said Ozil is the marquee signing which Arsenal have not had since Dennis Bergkamp in 1996. In my own opinion Flamini is the signing of the summer.
Flamini is the defensive midfielder we haven’t had since Gilberto Silva in 2002-2007 or Emmanuel Petit in 1997-1999.
Take the first game against Aston Villa when Arsenal had a midfield of Ramsey, Wilshere and Rosicky. There is not a defensive bone in any of them! The third counter attack goal Villa scored was a prime example why Arsenal needed a defensive midfielder
Not only does Flamini provide defensive cover, he also seems to be the one who is doing all the talking on the pitch and is the one who is encouraging his team mates all the time.
As much as Ozil was a terrific signing, having all these flair players without a ‘Makelele type’ player in the team is pointless.
If Arsenal are to have a successful season this year, Flamini will be key to it.
