5 January signings Arsenal fans want to forget quickly

|

It’s the January transfer window, which means that Arsenal fans will be hopeful of some top-class additions to help push them towards the Premier League title. Unfortunately, it’s not how things turn out sometimes.

The Gunners have a strong record in the transfer market but for every success story there is a player who couldn’t live up to the expectations placed upon them. Instead, they end up flopping and leaving many wonder why on earth they were signed in the first place.

Jonathan Kaney has taken a look at some of these horror shows in this article, where he’s selected five January signings that Arsenal supporters will quickly want to forget about. If these lot are anything to go buy, Arsenal may benefit from keeping the purse closed this month.

Emmanuel Adebayor

Gooners can barely utter the name of Emmanuel Adebayor without an expletive at the end of it after the way he’s behaved at City and Spurs since he left the Emirates.

Despite playing relatively well in his time at the club, he is a former player who everyone wants to forget ever graced the famous Arsenal jersey.

After becoming one of the most hated figures in football due to his ego and diva behaviour we sold him for £25m for a huge profit and his career has never the same. To top it off he currently collects a huge wage from Spurs for training with their reserves.

Thomas Eisfeld

German prospect Thomas Eisfeld was poached from Borussia Dortmund in January of 2012, and Gooners fans thought they had the next Mario Gotze on their hands.

It wasn’t to be. The German was completely underwhelming at the Emirates and looked well out his depth. Unfortunately Eisfeld was another young player who just couldn’t make it at the club and was sold to Fulham in the summer of 2014.

Jose Antoino Reyes

Harsh, as Reyes won the Premier League and FA Cup with the club, but Gooners will always look back at his time at the club with frustration at his time at Highbury and his waste of talent.

Since limping back to La Liga after his ill-fated spell his name has always synonymous with one of the worst young big name signings in Premier League history.

Kim Kallstrom

The signing of Swedish international Kim Kallstrom shows that everyone makes mistakes.

With emergency midfield cover needed, unbelievably the Swede was brought in on loan from Spartak Moscow with an injury that prevented him playing for us for weeks. He barely kicked a ball for us before going back to Russia at the end of the season. Possibly Arsene Wengers worst judgement in a signing ever.

Andrey Arshavin

Being honest I always liked Arshavin, which is extremely controversial with Gooners, as many feel he was a massive failure.

The Russian superstar signed in January 2009 and in an impressive few months, which included a famous night at Anfield where he scored four goals, he injected some much need quality into a weak squad to help us qualify for the Champions League.

It all turned sour very quickly though. Gunners became disillusioned with his attitude and his lack of work rate in big games. He warmed the bench in his last two seasons at the club and with him making constant comments about how much he hated London and his laziness on the pitch, Arshavin is another one who Gooners would rather forget wore the shirt.
