Possible Arsenal departures in the January transfer window

|

The January transfer window is fast approaching and there will undoubtedly be a lot of transfers made all over the world, possibly even more than normal due to the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Brazil this summer. With players wanting to showcase their talents to their international managers in hope of making their World Cup dreams a reality, those players that don’t often get a lot of football will more than likely be on the lookout for loan deals or permanent moves to insure that they are getting first team football ahead of this summer. Arsenal fans will be hoping to see some new faces at the club in 2014, however there are some players that may look to move on from The Emirates this winter.

Nicklas Bendtner

Bendtner

The ‘Great Dane’ himself could be on the way out of The Emirates this summer after being with the club since the age of 15. Bendtner’s Arsenal career was seemingly over this summer when he said he would be leaving the club, however Wenger was unable to bring in another striker which meant it was vital for him to keep Nicklas Bendtner as cover for Olivier Giroud. The Dane then slated the club for ‘forcing’ him to stay, although it was reported that Bendtner turned down offers from clubs such as Frankfurt due to them not offering the wages he desired.

Then the tides started to change as Arsene Wenger decided to start Bendtner in a Premier League home tie against Hull City. Bendtner managed to score his first goal for Arsenal since 2011 (It must be noted he has been on loan for the last two seasons) after just two minutes and the game ended in a 2-0 win for the Gunners. Now many people could be forgiven for believing that this is the start of a revival to Bendtner’s Arsenal career, although it does seem increasingly unlikely that Bendtner will be at Arsenal much longer. Despite Mikel Arteta’s recent comments about Bendtner being ‘vital’ to Arsenals title challenge, the lumbering forward will most likely leave the club in January if Arsene Wenger can bring in a suitable replacement.

It also seems that Nicklas Bendtner himself is already planning the next step of his career despite his involvement in Arsenal’s first team squad this season. Bendtner told the Danish press he envisages himself playing for, wait for it, ‘Real Madrid or Barcelona’ next season.
Although I’m sure most fans won’t be disappointed to see Bendtner leave it is still important that we sign a replacement before letting the ‘Great Dane’ leave.

Thomas Vermaelen

Vermaelen to leave arsenal

Even though Vermaelen is still officially Arsenal captain he has seen himself frozen out of the Gunners starting eleven this season as Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have formed a formidable partnership. Vermaelen is said to be ‘suffering’ because of his omission from the Arsenal side, but Arsene Wenger claims he is no rush to sell his club captain and the centre-back has not asked for a transfer, however things could change quickly in January as Vermaelen has fallen behind Vincent Kompany and Jan Vertonghen in the Belgium national squad, meaning that he may find himself sitting on the bench in Brazil. The Belgian has started only one Premier League match this season, which is clearly not ideal when you are fighting for a place in Belgium’s defence.

Speaking back on the 15th October Vermaelen told the Daily Mail “I’ll have to think about that when it’s necessary. January is still a few months ahead. Of course, never playing will not be the ideal situation for me to go to the World Cup, that’s for sure,”

“People ask me if I panic because I’m not playing a lot but I’m not.”

“I have spoken to the manager but it will remain private between us. Things can happen in a split second and change my situation. That can happen tomorrow or next weekend. In that case, we will speak differently in January. I have to be ready for that.”

Though it seems Vermaelen has not yet pushed for a move away from The Emirates I wouldn’t be surprised to see him leave the club in January, although I would of course be devastated. Potential suitors for Vermaelen include the likes of Inter Milan, and you can’t help but feel a player of Vermaelen’s quality will be desperate to secure first team football before the World Cup, although of course he may not have to force a move away from Arsenal in order to achieve this.

Loan Moves

Most transfer windows see at least one Arsenal player go out on loan and I don’t think this coming January window will be any different. Loan deals are a superb opportunity for young players to gain first team experiences, below are a list of potential players that could be loaned out in January:
• Emmanuel Frimpong
• Ryo Miyachi
• Thomas Eisfield
• Kris Olsson

All in all the January transfer window is set to be enthralling with lots of players coming and going and you can be assured that thegooner.com will be following Arsenal’s transfer activity very closely.

You failed to mention Jenkinson, who has the advantage of being fully on-boarded playing in the same team and in the same position, and had previously shown enough promise to earn an England call-up.

I would say rather than the options you have mentioned, who are equally not playing regular football, Jenkinson should be the natural successor to Sagna. Otherwise, you would be destroying his confidence.

And talking about confidence, I think that Wenger should rotate Vamaelen into a few more games than he is doing at the moment. We risk losing him, and I would rather we have him than some fellow who would need time to imbibe the spirit and culture.

Unfortunately I don’t feel that Jenkinson is ready to step into the shoes of Bacary Sagna yet, and personally I am not sure if he will ever become Arsenal’s first choice right-back. I also don’t feel that Arsenal could loan out Jenkinson otherwise we would have lack of cover at right-back

Also on your point regarding Vermaelen, I don’t feel that it would be sensible for Wenger to keep rotating Vermaelen in, why change a winning formula? (Mert & Kos) Although I do feel it would be beneficial for Vermaelen to play in Arsenal’s FA Cup games this season to give him so competitive football.
