Wenger: Why we do not need to sign a new centre-back

|

Many Arsenal fans have been calling for Wenger to go out and buy a new centre-back in January as we continue to leak goals. But the boss does not think we need to strengthen in that department especially now that Vermaelen is fit again and he played very well alongside Mertesacker in midweek in the Champions League.

If Vermaelen is able to remain fit then there is no need for us to go shopping as his partnership with Mertesacker could grow to be one of the best in the league.

“The balance is vital,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.

“In fairness though, I must say that all the three can play with each other. Koscielny and Vermaelen can play together and Mertesacker can play with Vermaelen and Koscielny. It gives us a bit of an opportunity to rotate a bit when needed and people are tired.

“Ideally, Vermaelen will play on the left [of the centre-back pair]. But Koscielny can play on the left as well so we have a good potential and balance there. I think that all the three can play at any moment, and we still have Djourou and Squillaci as well.

“People wanted us to buy a centre-back so much and then suddenly you realise we have plenty.”

There is no doubt that Vermaelen and Mertesacker are our best combination but do you think we still need to go buy another centre-back?

  • mbukino friday says:

maybe cahill of bolton is enough and then montolivio, granero, and agbolahor

  • bc says:

Yes sell djourou and squillaci as well as hoyte. bring in a better centre back than we currently have then we will have 4 decent centre backs. bartley and miquel should then be promoted to the squad full time as further cover. we should then go for a better right back than we currently have and a better left back. my 3 would be van der weil cahill and baines but i would also clyne subotic and vertonghen.

  • Arsenal should improve in this department to avoid leaking goals.our goal difference is bad and its time to ammend this.
