It is hard to keep track of all the transfer activity at Arsenal today and I am sure tomorrow is going to be worse as the window closes.
The search for a new centre-back signing continues and it looks like Arsene Wenger has decided to turn to German international Per Mertesacker.
Mertesacker is in the final year of his contract at Werder Bremen and the German club may be looking to sell him now rather than let him go on a free next summer. It is being reported that Arsenal are having talks with Werder Bremen today about this deal and it could be concluded in the next 24 hours.
I wonder if this means that Wenger has given up hope on signing Bolton’s Gary Cahill and would rather go for the cheaper £6million option of Mertesacker.

In my opinion Cahill is overrated. Mertesacker, on the other hand, is a world class player with qualities that will be very beneficial to the Gunners. He’s a big lad, but still he’s pretty quick – and he’s a natural leader. He’s like a better version of Brede Hangeland.

Althrough Cahill is a good defender, in my opinion he is too similar to Vermaelen. Mertesacker on the other hand is a tall, composed, sweeper style defender who likes to hang back – a perfect complement to Vermaelen, who likes to run forward and attack the ball.
