With Arsenal seemingly getting closer to selling Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, the Metro is reporting today that Arsenal may be ready to bid for Wigan’s 20-year-old Irish midfielder James McCarthy.
McCarthy is a quality young midfielder who was one of Wigan’s best players last season. He can operate in a central midfield role and would have to compete against the likes of Ramsey, Wilshere and Song for a place in the Arsenal starting lineup, that is if we do sell Fabregas.
Yet again, I do not think Arsenal should be spending cash on signing young players. We have enough young players full of quality and what we need now is to sign experienced players who will come straight into the side and make a positive difference.
Taking nothing away from McCarthy, but I do not think he is the kind of player Arsenal need right now. Now if you told me that Arsenal want to sign Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia then we are talking as he is one of the best left-wingers in the league. It is players like that that we need to sign who will add instant value to the side.
