Despite a 1-0 loss to Swansea City, Per Mertesacker remains optimistic that his Arsenal squad can go into Old Trafford and hand Manchester United a defeat this Sunday.

With Chelsea having already won the Premier League, the battle in the standings is for sole possession of second place.

After the loss to Swansea, which ended the Gunner’s 10 game winning streak, Manchester City jumped to the second position and are now considered the favourites to finish the season as runner ups.

Arsenal trail City be three points, yet Mertesacker still feels confident that Arsenal will close in on the Blues in the final three games to secure the runner up position.

The defender realises that Arsenal need to play strong football from here on out, starting with United on Sunday. Speaking to the media about the match this weekend, Mertesacker said,

“We feel positive. We won there once and it’s possible to do that twice per season. We are looking forward to it.”

The runner up position means a lot to Arsenal.

They have finished in fourth place for the past few seasons and finishing in second would be a big confidence boost going into next year’s campaign.
