The papers have been on a bit of a frenzy recently with suggestions that Arsenal are in a race to sign Shakhtar Donetsk’s Brazilian playmaker, Douglas Costa.

The Daily Star are reporting this morning that both Arsenal and Manchester United are set to miss out on the Brazilian as Monaco have made him one of their prime targets as they look to replace James Rodriguez.

Reports that Arsene Wenger was willing to bid up to £16 million for the 23-year-old appear more of an attempt to generate internet traffic than provide an accurate report of Arsenal’s transfer business.

With Alexis Sanchez having already been brought on-board, the refusal to bring back Cesc Fabregas, and the wealth of attacking midfield talent already present in the squad, this story has gathered an unnecessary amount of pace so far this summer.

The club are hardly in need of anymore attacking reinforcements, so the news that Monaco are in pole position to land his signature won’t disappoint many a Gooner.
