Arsenal are reportedly interested in Anderlecht defender Cheikhou Kouyaté according to his agent Saffet Balkan who says he has held talks with the Gunners.

“I have been in talks with representatives from Liverpool and Arsenal over Cheikhou Kouyaté,” Balkan told Turkish-football.com.

“Arsenal are very interested in Kouyaté.

“Southampton and Manchester City have also been in contact with me over him.

“It’s very likely that he will be joining a Premier League club soon.”

This is not the first time that Arsenal have been linked with a move for the giant 24-year old centre back. Arsene Wenger was interested in Kouyaté back at the 2012 London Olympic Games where Kouyaté impressed for the Senegal national side. He was refused a work permit, however, and a move to Arsenal never happened.

The centre back has since been granted a Belgian passport, through playing for Anderlecht, and is set to talk with his suitors in the coming days.

This could be a very good transfer for Arsenal as we need more options in our central defence. This season we have been solid with Mertesacker and Koscielny with Vermaelen as the back up. But with talk of Vermaelen wanting to leave to gain regular first team football, Kouyaté could be the perfect player to come in and cover for our two current centre backs and maybe even talk over from one of them as he has the qualities.

With all the attention right now being on Arsenal’s need to sign a new striker, it is easy to forget that there are other areas in our squad that need strengthening if we are to become a major force this season and win the Premier League.
