The Metro is reporting that Arsenal are poised to make a January transfer bid for West Ham’s 25-year old central defender Winston Reid.

It is being suggested that Arsene Wenger is looking for another center back in-case Thomas Vermaelen decides to leave Arsenal in January in a bid to get more regular first team football in preparation for the World Cup in 2014. £6million is the fee being mentioned for the services of the New Zealand international.

Now do Arsenal really need another centre back? If Vermaelen does leave Arsenal in January then there is no doubt that we will need to bring in a replacement, but is Reid the type of quality we should be after? Yes, he has bags of Premier League experience but there is always the fear of stepping up to a big side like Arsenal. The great form he has shown at West Ham may not be what he brings to Arsenal.

Arsenal may be better off going for a bigger name centre back with Champions League experience if we really want to push for the Champions League and the title. I can not see Reid being of that high standard. The best scenario for me would be to do all we can to convince Vermaelen to stay at the club for the rest of the season as he is the club captain after all and I am sure he will get his chance to step in for Mertesacker or Koscielny.
